The Reason for the Tide
This is the story that explains why something is the way it is. I always wondered why the ocean has a tide? Also why is it that the tide goes in at night, then out in the morning? My name is Oceina, and I’m setting off to find why the ocean has so many different ways It moves. I live in Washington, right along the ocean; I live right on the shoreline. I never have been in the ocean, only because I’m scared of the water, but I’m determined to go into the ocean and ask around.
Three weeks later when Oceina had finally gathered up enough courage to go into the ocean, watching and recording the ocean, researching the shoreline to see, once she gets in, whom is she going to ask? At exactly 4:32 pm. She tells her parents she is going to the ocean for about an our with Whitney, her best friend, she really isn’t going with but, she will be down as a “look out.” As she walks down pass the logs and the kelp, and all the muck and slim, she sees a reflection in the distance. She knows where she is going once she gets in. She steps in getting use to the water Walking around, slowly getting deeper as she paces back and forth. Once she gets up the courage, she dunks her head under the water for a brief second. As she goes under for that second, she see a whole world, with fish, mermaids, the king and the queen of the ocean, all this land of castles and valleys. She pulls her head out of the water looks a Whitney and smiles, Whitney smiles back. Oceina goes under all the way now.
Getting under she swims toward the castles and the people, she realizes that she doesn’t have to hold her breath. As she swims toward a sea jellyfish, named Quag, confronts her. He’s like a patrol fish that looks for intruders like Oceina, “ What are you doing her at Rouwer Valley?” said Quag. “ I came down with a question for you guys, I want to know about the Ocean, and why the tide comes in and goes out.” Quag doesn’t know what to think, tells Oceina to come down and talk to the others, he doesn’t know what she is talking about. As they go in to Rouwer, Oceina is greeted by a lot of different fishes and people fish. She hears whispers about her, the people of the sea, haven’t seen her type before, as like she hasn’t seen fish like this, other than her fish skippers, in her room.
Both Quag and Oceina are walking through the town, Quag is known around the valley so everyone greet him, and he says “hello” back to everyone. Reaching the end of the valley, stand the castle that she saw when she first dunked her head under water. “ This is where you should ask, this is where King Salmon lives and Queen Angle live.” said Quag. The only thing Oceina could say was “ WOW! This is like what fish see when I put that fake castle in the bowl.” “What?” said Quag “ Nothing!” said Oceina.
As Quag knocks loud so it is herd on the castles door, and Nancy, the caretaker Shark fish answers. “Hello…what are you?” Says Nancy “Human, I want to speak to out king or queen about something I have noticed above the water, Quag said I want to talk to Them about these observations.” said Oceina “Ok…hang on.” Nancy walks off and gets the King. King Salmon steps into the room, greets and says, “hello, Nancy says there is something you have noticed about us kind, and you have a question?” “Right!’ Said Oceina “come to the other room so we can speak in privacy” Salmon said.
Oceina explains what she has notices and talks about what she has seen over the past four months that she has lived on the shore and every night, she notices what happens. The look on King Salmons face says that he knows what she is talking about but he doesn’t want any of the sea people to know too much about what is out on the other side of the water.
“So you noticed our wars,” said Salmon. “ Wars?” said Oceina. “ Yes, what you are seeing are wars between us and the sharks, the evil sharks that live on 6 miles out into the ocean. They come in and feed on us and think that they can take over us, and our valley. We must always be prepared for this time. It isn’t everyday, but almost every month. Once a month, at the beginning.” Said Salmon. “But I see these every day in the morning and night.” said Oceina “Are time is different, if you haven’t noticed, but everything is different down here.” Salmon says. “ I can see, I didn’t think that fish could talk, or I could breath under water, but now I know. Does everyone see what I see?” Oceina said. “NO! We would always be bothered if they could.” Salmon said in a harsh tone. Oceina explains what she now knows, “ so the reason that the water goes in is the war between you and the sharks and you guys right?” “ Yes, when the water goes in it shows that we are going in to fight! When it comes out that means that we are coming back from war with are wins, or loses, but either way, we come back. The Queen is off in town speaking to the others about the situation the we have with the sharks, we are hoping that we can establish some peace with the sharks, but I don’t see it happening” King salmon said as he looks out the window, down on the town.
“ Wow, that’s so cool! I had no Idea, I want to stay here now, and it so cool you seem so different from my parents. I don’t think though I can deal with being in a war.” Oceina said.
She stands up and walks out the door to the main door.
“ Well now you know what we have to deal with, we have it just as hard down in the water was what your kind have above the water.” King salmon says as he walks Oceina to the main door.
“Thanks for telling me about what you have to go through just to live.” Oceina said with a smile on.
“Well yeah, ha! Ok, well nice to meet you, have Quag escort you as far as he can go, have a good day, and thank you for coming down.” King salmon says as he stands at the door.
“ Thank you for the information, and your secret is safe with me. I wont tell anyone about you guys” Oceina says as she walks with Quag, and waves. “Bye.”
Walking back to the shore she thinks about what she learns. She ignores Quag’s rambling up until the end and says “ thanks for swimming me to shore, it was nice.” “O yeah, well yeah, you know sure.” Quag said swimming backwards.
Oceina walks out of the water shakes her head, walking toward Whitney, asks, “How long was I gone for?”
“Half an our?” Whitney guesses not sure. “What did you learn? Did you see anything down there, why didn’t you droned?” Whitney interrogates Oceina.
Oceina replies by saying “Not too much, just rocks and fish and as for not dying, well…. I’m just that good.”
